Reflections from LawFest 2026: Innovation, connection and a few unexpected moments

By Piet Bourke, Implementation Consultant

LawFest 2026, held earlier this month at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland and attended alongside my colleagues Sarah Martin-Lewis and Chad Ripepi, once again proved why it’s such a standout event for the legal technology and innovation community. From insightful conversations to emerging trends, it was two days packed with energy, ideas and plenty of memorable moments.

A community driving innovation

From a vendor perspective, one of the most striking aspects was the sheer number of passionate, like-minded organisations all focused on empowering New Zealand law firms. There’s no shortage of innovation in this space right now. LawFest demonstrated the collective drive to help law firms work smarter, operate more efficiently and ultimately deliver better outcomes for their clients.

AI takes centre stage

A key theme throughout the event was the continued rise of AI. What stood out this year was the shift from AI being treated as an ‘add-on’ feature to becoming the foundation of entire systems. Whether it’s enabling more intuitive, context-based searching or supporting entirely new approaches to legal processes, AI is clearly reshaping the landscape.

A focus on continuous improvement

Beyond the tech, conversations with law firms highlighted a growing focus on continuous improvement. It was fascinating to hear how some practices are investing in dedicated project management roles to keep evolving their operations. That kind of forward-thinking mindset is a strong signal of where leading law firms are heading.

Collaboration and connection

Of course, LawFest is just as much about the people as it is about the technology. Sharing the L3 stand with LC Consulting and DigiMaster created a genuinely collaborative space, bringing together complementary expertise across consultancy, training and technology. It was also great to connect in person with clients, partners and new faces.

The lighter side of LawFest

There were plenty of lighter moments too. Collecting an unexpected assortment of branded socks became something of a side quest (three pairs secured, though one elusive set slipped through the net). A lucky win from the VXT claw machine – thanks to LEAP’s sponsorship – added to the fun. And the event even delivered on the small but important details, including some solid gluten-free catering options.

Moments that matter

Then there were the human moments that make events like this memorable. A chance reconnection with an old colleague from nearly two decades ago was a reminder of how small – and interconnected – the professional world can be. It was also a week of comings and goings, including catching up with familiar faces before their next chapter overseas.

A leadership (and suitcase) story

And, of course, no LawFest recap would be complete without mentioning Sarah’s now-legendary luggage saga. After spending most of the event without it, she demonstrated exactly what great leadership looks like: adaptability, composure and a sense of humour when things don’t go to plan. Thankfully, the suitcase made a timely arrival before day 2 – much to everyone’s relief.

Looking ahead

LawFest delivered on all fronts: insightful, well-organised and full of opportunities to connect and learn. It’s clear that the legal sector in New Zealand is embracing change, with technology, collaboration and innovation leading the way. Already looking forward to next year.
